We need to know what is going on at the City Council on a regular basis and we are putting together a team of volunteers to audit and report on it. This is important both for our Cool Cities campaign and for Water. Judith Bunney has agreed to organize this; volunteers will have to meet with Paul Paryski and Voitek to find out more about what they are looking for. We have one volunteer for this; we need two or three more.

For the wonderful volunteers that helped last year with the School CFL Bulb Exchange and the Energy Efficiency Assemblies, AND for new volunteers, who like to work in their communities, please consider volunteering for a new School & Neighborhood Energy Education & CFL Program starting in September 2008.

Five to 15 people assemble every month or so on a Saturday to clean a section of the river that we have assumed responsibility for. It has made a big difference and we have gotten some great publicity from it. John Buchser has been doing it, but he has run out of time. We are moving to a three person Chair of this; we have two, we need one more

We need someone to do what I have been doing—talking to new members who express an interest by sending us a postcard. In an average month I meet with five to eight potential volunteers.
Beyond that, we need several people to tap into likely lists and sources that we haven’t even touched: recent election volunteers, Valle Vidal volunteers discovered by the national Building Environmental Communities ( BEC) staff, hikers, and long-term members.
We need someone who is creative, tenacious, and capable of organizing other people, to lead this effort, and possibly others who are less creative to do the legwork. We picked up 100 new addresses by sending out postcards last summer, and more than that with our additional mailing in January. We have about 1,700 to go. I suspect there are two ways we can approach this.
Other volunteers are needed to organize events so the active volunteers can get to know each other (social cohesion). These include house parties, monthly meetings/get-togethers/lectures and events organized around particular issues like the Valle Vidal, the Cool Cities campaign, global warming, etc. This needs as many people as we can get and can be a small commitment like setting up a coffee and cookies table or a larger commitment like throwing a party to discuss “An Inconvenient Truth.”

This Committee oversees issues in the Santa Fe and Carson National Forests. It needs more members and a permanent chair.
The immediate issue is work on the Travel Management Plan, which is about to issue a draft EIS with recommendations on which routes and trails to keep open to ORV and other motorized uses, and which to close off.
It is critically important for the long term health of our beloved forests that we support the Forest in closing a number of unnecessary, and often illegal roads that now crisscrosst the landscape and that we be a voice for quiet, non- polluting recreational activities within the forest.
The Committee also deals with wildlands/urban interface issues in terms of wildfire threats, will need to respond to the Valle Vidal draft management plan EIS. when issued, and inappropriate oil & gas developmens. Call Norma McCallan 471-0005 if interested in helping.
