The Northern New Mexico Group of the Sierra Club is pleased to present Day Hikes in the Santa Fe Area, Sixth Edition. For many years, Day Hikes has been the authoritative trail guide for Northern New Mexico. Due to extensive revision and updating, the new edition of Day Hikes is even more useful. All hikes that appeared in previous editions were re-hiked, two hikes were dropped, and 14 new hikes were added, for a total of 60 fabulous hikes within a day’s reach of Santa Fe.

Emerging and experienced hikers alike will appreciate the well-organized summary of round trip distance, hike time, elevation range, difficulty rating, driving distance, map choices, and seasonal suitability that precedes each hike.

Every hike is accompanied by an easy-to-use map, courtesy of Greg Ohlsen of Travel Bug. Ohlsen also provides specs for those wishing to use GPS in conjunction with the hike maps.

Also new to this edition are 54 photographs of the hikes and environs.

Best of all, every hike description in this book is written by an experienced local hiker--someone who knows the hike best.

It is worth noting that money earned by sales of previous editions of Day Hikes has been used by the Sierra Club to support a number of environmental campaigns in New Mexico. These campaigns include efforts to save old timber stands from logging, to protect pristine wilderness areas from mining operations, to keep foothills east of Santa Fe and the National Forest lands near the ski basin free from development, to have the East Fork of the Jemez declared a National Recreation Area, to dedicate the Valles Caldera to public ownership, to pass New Mexico’s hard rock mining bill, and most recently, to help pass legislation to protect Valle Vidal. In addition, the Sierra Club contributes to the support of other local environmental groups. Of course, the need for support for environmental efforts in New Mexico is ongoing.
