Subject: Please Review Furbearer Management
Dear Commissioner ___________________________________,
It is critical that New Mexico have sustainable management practices in
place for furbearers, like bobcat and fox.
Please complete a full review of the furbearer management regulations
this year, and allow for public comment on these regulations. I also
request that you regularly review these regulations every two years to
ensure that furbearer populations remain sustainable.
Additionally, please don’t depend on the “sustainable kill limit”
system, which is not sustainable at all. It is important that we use the
best available science and population numbers for furbearer management,
as well as establish quotas in order to protect the populations of
bobcat, fox and other furbearers.
Without a quota system in place, no mechanism stops the killing, even
when the “sustained kill limit” is exceeded. Too much killing can harm
populations or even cause localized extirpations.
The sooner we address these issues, the sooner we can ensure sustainable
populations for furbearers, so we can maintain a healthy balance of
nature in our Land of Enchantment. Thank you for your consideration.
